Is the whole cake really edible?

In short

Yes. Even though the design may look like a prop and the figures look artificial, everything is edible. The only things removed before cutting are the small fixings that hold the structure up.

The usual surprise

It is the question we are asked most in front of a designed cake, and the answer always throws people: yes, you eat it. The fondant, the modelled figures, the sugar flowers, the hand-painted details.

What you do not

Some pieces need internal supports to hold themselves up, and certain ornaments are mounted on bases. All of that is removed before slicing, and whoever delivers the cake will tell you exactly what and where.
