Why does a designed cake cost more than an ordinary one?

In short

Because they are two different products that share a name. A cake from the display case is baked in batches with a standard finish. A designed cake is thought out for your event, modelled by hand, and occupies one person for hours, sometimes days.

  • Design. Someone translates your idea into something that can actually be baked and held up.
  • Handwork. Modelling, painting, flowers, textures. That is where most of the time goes.
  • Structure. Tall cakes carry internal supports worked out so they do not collapse.
  • Fresh ingredients with no preservatives, and the cold-chain logistics that demands.

Seen that way, what you are paying for is not decoration on top of a cake. It is a piece made for one afternoon of your life.
