How do you cut a tiered cake?

In short

From the top down, tier by tier, never all three at once. First lift the top tier onto a separate plate, cut its portions, and only then move to the next.

Take the supports out first

A tiered cake carries dowels inside each level so the weight above does not crush it. Whoever delivers the cake will tell you how many there are and where. They are not edible and they have to come out.

A clean knife between cuts, dipped in hot water and dried, makes the difference between neat slices and a smeared plate.
